South West Fife Youth Strategy Group

The South West Fife Youth Strategy Group (YSG) is a multi agency partnership. Chaired by Callum Farquhar from Cairneyhill Scouts, the group has members from Fife Council's CLD, Education, Family and Community Support Team, Active Schools, Libraries, Police, Clued up, uniformed organisations, voluntary sector and local communities.

The group meet 5/6 times per year to network, share information and good practice and establish a joint Action Plan. For 2012/2013 the actions were:

  • swf-blairhall-recyclingSupport the Driving for Success programme in the SW Fife Area
  • Support Fife Youth Work Week and the YOSCARS
  • Develop volunteering accreditation and support
  • Review communication and liaison amongst all agencies who undertake outreach and detached work
  • Roll out of Leadership Award
  • Involve young people in the YSG

The focus on this action plan has resulted in:

  • 10 young people successfully taking part in the Driving for Success course, all receiving this award and Emergency First Aid certificate.
  • A varied programme was on offer during Fife Youth Work Week plus 5 YOSCARS going to our young people
  • Funding was secured to employ a youth worker to support young people through their volunteering.
  • Friday night briefings between the Police, detached youth workers, Community wardens and Clued up have ensured a joined up approach and a focus of resources where required. ASB has reduced during this period.
  • 24 young people through Cairneyhill Explorer Scouts are undertaking various SQA Awards in Leadership, Volunteering and Personal Development. Their major expedition in summer 2013 is to Japan during which many of the Experiences and Outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence will be achieved by the young people who are participating.
  • Facilitated self evaluation is built into all provision and young people are involved in innovative ways of planning, evaluating and delivery of youth provision that was highlighted as very good practice during the 2 recent learning community inspections undertaken by Education Scotland.
