Securing a future

GL came along to the job club for support to get back into employment. He was claiming Job Seekers Allowance after his claim for Employment Support Allowance ended due to being declared fit for work.

GL’s employment goal was to return back into the security industry but he required a valid Security Industry Authority (SIA) card to do so. The Welfare Support Assistant (WSA) referred GL to Key Worker Job Broker (KWJB) for more 1 to 1 employment support.  The KWJB was able to assist GL to access funding and apply for the appropriate training.

GL gained his SIA card and was offered a full time security post. He was happy to secure employment but concerned about his financial situation until his first wage was payed.  The WSA carried out a “better off in work” calculation, making GL aware of his expected income.  The WSA completed a Scottish Welfare Crisis Grant requesting living expenses and fuel costs for 4 weeks to cover the lay month.  GL was granted £240 and £60 fuel vouchers. The WSA also completed a housing benefit change of circumstances application, reporting his new income and requested the “run on” which covered his rent charges and council tax for 4 weeks until his first payment was received.

GL said “the best thing I done was to go the job club. I have received so much support and help I would have never managed it myself”.
